Shakeology Balls!

Meet my very best friend.  This little ball right here saves the day midweek when my sweet tooth is off the hook and I desperately need some kind of indulgence!

Ingredients

3 scoops vanilla or chocolate Shakeology

1/2 cup unsweetened coconut

1/2 cup nut butter of choice

1/2 cup honey

1/2 cup chocolate chips or cocoa nibs

How to Make

Combine all ingredients in a large bowl.  With slightly wet hands (this is important!!) form into small balls and place on parchment paper.  You should have approximately 15 balls when done.  Refrigerate or freeze.  Enjoy!

*For my 21 day fix friends – 2 Shakeology balls is equivalent to 1 yellow!*

Don’t Blink

When you have a baby, everyone says time will fly.  They will say, “don’t blink.”  You really do believe them, but you just can’t quite understand it in full until you live it.

Those first few weeks with that little baby are T O U G H.  They are brutal.  Can we be real?  They kind of suck a lot of the time.  There is no sleep, there is so much to learn, there is endless self-doubt, not to mention bleeding nipples and a pretty sore lady part.  There is A LOT of crying, and a lot of wondering why the hell the baby is STILL crying.  Then you cry.  It’s a mess.

If your transition into motherhood was a smooth process, mama I commend you but honey…I do not believe you. 😉

Anyway, I digress.

Don’t blink, right?

Those days go by S L O W.  So slow.  They feel painfully long, especially after daddy goes back to work.  You are caught between overwhelming love for that sweet baby and about a millisecond away from entering yourself into a psych ward. Don’t blink?? I wished I could blink and all of a sudden this scary new human that came out of me could hold her head up, smile at me so I know I’m not totally failing at this whole mama thing, and maybe even stop exploding from every hole she’s got.

And then, you do blink, and holy crap she is 8 months old.  She is 8 months old and she is crawling, she is smiling, she is laughing, she is playing, she is exploring, she is learning, she is no longer that little scary potato you once wished away.  And all of a sudden, you wish you didn’t blink.  You wish you didn’t wish those early tough weeks away.  And your fairly certain that if you blink again, she will be standing in front of you in her wedding dress.  (Now I’m crying.)

So, if you’re reading this and you have a new baby at home or perhaps a baby on the way…it will be hard.  Undoubtedly, it will be the most difficult thing you will ever do in your entire life.  Ever.  Times a million.  But truly, don’t blink.  You’ll want those days back.

Permission

Who (or what) do you give permission to?

Today I have been struggling with a heavy dose of anxiety.  The kind that kind of freaks you out, ya know?  Where you can’t quite get your breath in all the way and every single thing makes you want to either scream at the top of your lungs or break down in a puddle of tears.

I did both.

After I calmed down a bit, I thought about how I was willingly giving permission for my anxiety to ruin my mood.  Not just ruin my mood, but potentially my day.  Heck, potentially my LIFE.

It made me think about how often I give others the permission to define who I am and who I want to be.  I allow their judgement to dictate my every move.  Just like I was giving anxiety permission to ruin my day, I often give others the permission to ruin my self confidence or dictate decisions that I am making.

There is one person that should have permission to make any calls about me or my life and that is God.  Otherwise, no one and no thing should ever have that power.

So today, and moving forward, when I am feeling anxious or I am feeling judged, I will ask myself if I am giving that person or that feeling permission to define me.  If the answer is yes, prayer mode gets put into action.

Don’t give anyone or anything that permission, my friend.

Purpose In Suffering

We all ask the question “WHY ME?” right?

Maybe you ask yourself or God – Why do I have to have cancer?  Why did my parents have to get divorced?  Why was my husband unfaithful?  Why is my child disabled?  Why did I get in that car accident?  Why did I fall into addiction? Why ME?

I asked that question more times than I could ever count.  Who doesn’t?  But what I found is that asking “why” kept me where I was — lingering in my suffering and and wading in my pain.

Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?”

Matthew 14:31

When I actively chose to accept that my pain was for a greater purpose, that pain I was feeling…that burden that was so heavy – it became bearable.  Knowing that I was walking through this difficult season so that someone, some how could benefit made that pain a little less daunting.

God allows suffering.  He will allow you to suffer because he wants to USE you.  I beg you to allow Him to use you.  Face your trial, lift your eyes to Jesus, pray earnestly to Him and ask him to open your eyes to the good that can come of such darkness.  He is your light and your hope – allow Him to shine that light through you to others.

Instead of harboring your pain, allow yourself to be vulnerable and share your heart with someone else who is hurting.  Let them know they’re not alone.  Give them hope.  You will find that when you are lifting someone else up, it is just so dang hard to stay down on yourself.

In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

Matthew 5:16

Christina Maziarz

This is a very special transformation story, because this sweet chick is my COUSIN!  Christina’s transformation makes my heart feel so warm and fuzzy.  For Christina, working out isn’t just about abs and muscles – it’s about mental clarity and self acceptance.  Her story is beautiful.

“July 2016.

That’s when this picture was taken. What do you see? Corey and me in Florida at the beach in our swimsuits on a beautiful day.

What you can’t see: I’m not breathing in this picture because I’m sucking my stomach in so hard. I’m turned almost awkwardly sideways cause I thought that angle would make me look thinnest. And this was the 3rd or 4th attempt because I was disgusted with the first few.

This girl in this picture HATED looking in the mirror, HATED going to the beach, HATED her body. She noticed every little roll and imperfection, and she was desperate to lose weight. This led her to develop an extremely unhealthy relationship with food, regularly consuming less than 600 calories a day. She almost passed out after eating only a handful of almonds and half a bagel in a DAY, which she honestly thought was “so much” food. And she worked out 2-3 times a day in an attempt to burn more than she ate and still felt like that wasn’t enough. She was running herself into the ground.

Why am I talking about “her” and how “she” was? Because that WAS me…July 2016. But that is NOT me now, October 2016.

THREE MONTHS later
Yes, I’ve lost 10 inches and 3 pounds (yay!), but what I’ve GAINED is so much more important: confidence, a stronger relationship with my cousin (and now coach) Alyssa who we’ve discovered I’m scarily similar to, self-worth, respect for my body, a healthy relationship with food (I eat SIX TIMES a day and don’t feel a bit guilty about it), a healthy lifestyle, a positive outlook.”

Amanda Schemelia

Amanda is one of my fellow mama challengers!  She started off with the 21 day fix and has 110% transformed her entire L I F E.  Check out what this mama had to say…

“I’ve battled insecurities with my body for literally as long as I can remember. I didn’t take care of myself very well with all the drinking and partying I did which made things even worse because at that point I didn’t even realize how out of shape and overweight I actually was. Ive tried everything. Like honestly everything. Eating next to nothing, GNC products, hydroxycut, ripped power pack, tons of stuff never worked. Then once I got pregnant with Ellie I was like no I need to do SOMETHING. I gained a little over 50lbs with her. So I promised myself for me and HER that this time I’d really do it. And here we are……

I was totally skeptical of 21 day fix. That’s mostly why I put it off for so long. Nothing had worked before so why would this, ya know? But it’s nice. Because it’s not a pill, or liquid, or temporary rapid weight loss followed by an even more rapid weight gain. The portion sizes aren’t unrealistic and it’s personalized to fit YOU. I just love it. I am so happy with my results so far. I am going to keep on going. I obviously wasn’t able to achieve my final goal in the first 21 days because too much work needed to be done. But where I am after just 21 days not only physically but mentally as well is awesome.”

Protein Pancakes, Anyone?

When I was pregnant with our daughter, Addison, something happened.  I become OBSESSED with pancakes.  I couldn’t get enough of them.  And I didn’t want just plain old pancakes, ya know?  I wanted them to be dripping in syrup and topped with deliciousness.

So, after I gave birth I thought this would obsession would come to an end.  False.  Give me all the pancakes.

My husband and I decided to try to play around with some of our own healthier pancake recipes.  We tested out a whole bunch of different recipes and mixes and came to the conclusion that our absolute FAVORITE is Kodiak Cakes!

These tasty pancakes were absolutely delicious, packed with protein, and came out nice and fluffy – not flat and blah, ya feel me?  These guys were the TICKET!  I was impressed by the nutrition label as well.  Not only were they packed with protein, but they were low sugar/fat as well.  Sign me up.

Now like I said, it’s not just about the pancake.  It’s about the toppings as well.  One of our favorite syrups is a 0 calorie/0 sugar syrup made by Walden’s Farms.  It’s not a “clean” product but if you’re someone counting your macros, these syrups will be your new BFF’s.

Top those suckers with some syrup, a sliced banana, and a sprinkle of cinnamon and you have yourselves a pretty fine Saturday morning breakfast!

Note:  The recipe states that one batch makes several small pancakes.  We like to make one big fat monster pancake. 🙂

*If you’re feeling extra fancy, add some unsweetened cocoa powder and a dash of almond extract to the batter.  You’re welcome.*
